40 2.2 Mining-Specific Consumption and Carbon Emissions Granular mining-specific diesel consumption data in India remains underreported in the public domain. However, benchmarking against comparable open-cut operations in Australia—where fuel efficiency data is more systematically collected—indicates that large haul trucks consume 50–120 litres of diesel per operating hour depending on payload, gradient, and tyre condition [11]. Extrapolating from the fleet sizes reported by Coal India Limited and comparable production volumes suggests that the Indian mining sector consumes between 3.5 and 5.5 million tonnes of diesel annually. On the emissions side, nearly 50% of India's total CO output originates from coal combustion, 2 and mining operations contribute significantly to Scope 1 emissions through direct diesel combustion [15]. India's Fourth Biennial Update Report to the UNFCCC (2024) acknowledges this challenge, committing the mining sector to explore electrification as a decarbonisation lever within its broader Long-Term Low-Carbon Development Strategy [15]. 3. Global Electric Mining Truck Market 3.1 Market Size and Growth Trajectory The global mining truck market was valued at approximately USD 26 billion in 2025, with projectionsindicatingexpansiontoUSD42.14billion by2033,atacompoundannualgrowthrate(CAGR) of 6% [5]. Within this broader market, the electric drive segment-encompassing both battery electricanddiesel-electrichybridconfigurations- was valued at USD 1.2 billion in 2024, projected to reach USD 2.9 billion by 2033 [6], representing a substantially higher CAGR driven by decarbonisation mandates and falling battery costs. Komatsu's zero-emissions haul truck initiative has produced platforms specifically adapted for Indian terrain conditions, emphasising instant torque delivery and integration with mining automation technologies [4]. Caterpillar's battery-powered haul truck programme targets ultra-class (290-tonne) payloads. Sandvik and Epiroc have advanced underground battery electric loaders and drill rigs, achieving significant commercial adoption in Scandinavian and Canadian operations. Hitachi's zero-emissions truck research, often conducted in partnership with renewable energy providers, signals the sector's medium- term transition trajectory. 40 30 20 10 0 Total Market Size (USD Billion) Electric Drive Market (USD Billion) 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 0.0 2024 2025 2026 2027 2028 2029 2030 2031 2032 2033 Year Total Mining Truck Market (USD Bn) Electric Drive Segment (USD Bn)
