Cement Energy & Environment

33 grinding, achieving more than 50% energy savings compared to conventional ball mills and up to 20% compared to vertical roller mills. In recent years, cement producers have increasingly avoided standalone ball mills due to their high energy demand. However, many ball mill circuits from the 20th century remain in operation. With growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, the industry now faces an urgent opportunity: upgrading these circuits into efficient Roller Press-based systems to align with global sustainability goals. 2.0 KHD ROLLER PRESS CIRCUITS: PROPRIETARY EQUIPMENT BEING OFFERED The most efficient grinding circuit today consists of a roller press, a static separator (V Separator) and a dynamic separator (SK Separator) downstream for the final cut. It can be arranged as a single grinding stage, producing raw meal, slag meal or cement. The circuit can also handle all possible qualities and quantities of additives and substitute materials whichmight be difficult to grind. A variety of moisture contents, hard or soft feed, and even highly abrasive materials are best suited to be processed ina roller press grindingcircuit fromKHD. The development of Comflex® (‘com’minution with Fig-1: KHD Comflex® arrangement options Fig-2: KHD Roller Press 2.1 ROLLER PRESS KHD Roller Presses (Fig-2) are available in seven sizes, ranging from 7 to 27 Mega-Newton grinding force. The roller diameter is standardized from 1.7 m to 2.5 m to handle material feed in sizes of up to 100 mm. The roller width is related to the grind- ing force and ranges from 0.9 m to 1.8 m. ‘flex’ibility) led to a broad range of applications of roller press technology. Comflex® (Fig-1) enables KHD to design and use an identical grinding circuit for raw material, cement and slag grinding. At the same time Comflex® can handle any kind of moist material feed (with a moisture of up to 20 %) in the same grinding circuit layout and still offers the flexibility to be operated in finish and semi-finish grinding mode. 1.
