As a responsible corporate in the Ariyalur District and for creating a better biodiversity in the Ariyalur Town, Dalmia Cement, Ariyalur unit carried out the mass awareness campaign with the local community.
This mega event was kick started by taking pledge on non-usage of Plastics in Ariyalur District by Dalmia Executives (65 nos), O&M partners (around 60 nos) and around 30 members of the Ariyalur Municipality. Dalmia Plant Head and Ariyalur Municipality Sanitary Inspector (officiating Commissioner) flagged off the same.
After getting briefed on the purpose of this campaign, all the members along with Municipal staff were split into 6 groups and went on door to door plastic collection drive covering 3 wards (7, 8 & 9) in the heart of Ariyalur town consisting 12 streets (Periyar Nagar 1 – 6 streets, Alagappa Nagar 1st, 2nd & 3rd streets and City Babu Street, Pilliar Koil Street, Pugalendhi Street) for emphasizing on segregation of Dry & Wet waste separately and to be put in Wet & Dry waste along with color code for Bins. We collected the non-Recyclable plastics from all the homes in the said streets. As part of the awareness drive, we pasted stickers on the walls of each and every house in the area and got an oath signed off that they will henceforth say no to plastic.
After collection of waste from individual household, the team went to Ariyalur municipality for sorting of Dry & Wet waste. We were shown the process at the Ariyalur Municipality by officials on how the waste is converted into an effective manure.
The segregated Dry waste were filled in gunny bags and loaded in truck and taken to Kiln at Dalmia Plant for effective disposal. The truck loaded waste from Ariyalur Municipality weighing 2.34 tons (which includes Seized One time usage plastic from shops by municipality) was transported to Cement plant and Co-processed in Kiln without degrading the environment.
Once the truck reached near the co-processing location at plant, executives were apprised by the Plant Head on the noble cause of conducting this event across the country and the role of cement plants in eradicating Environmental Hazards by the plastics around us. An Oath was taken by all executives to stop usage of “One time use Plastic products”, Segregation of Waste at the source and help the society in cleaning the plastic waste.
