Indian Cement Industry witnessed an unprecedented growth as a sequel to the liberalisation policies the Government initiated with partial decontrol in 1982 culminating in total decontrol in 1989. Latest available technologies were introduced during the eighties calling for highly trained and skilled personnel. It was then recognised that there was an urgent need to develop sufficient human resources to meet the continued requirement of trained skilled personnel.

A Manpower Development Study was conducted by Holderbank under World Bank aid and it was decided that four cement companies be selected, one in each of the four regions North, East, South and West for setting up Regional Training Centres (RTCs) with commitment to human resource development.

Accordingly, four RTCs were set up with aid from the World Bank and The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), one each at

The RTCs are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, teaching aids and apparatus and tailor-made need based training packages. High quality technical packages have been translated into local languages also. Computer based training is given to personnel even at operator level.

Courses at RTCs include a variety of topics like mining, process and quality control, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, operation and maintenance of pollution control equipment, energy conservation and management, and various other aspects of cement production technology.

The RTCs thus have brought the rich experience of cement industry personnel, both indigenous and overseas, to the door step of the trainees.
